EXPERIENCE
Mr. Obergfell joined USI in 1998 as Chief Structural Engineer. He manages USI's Bridge Department and oversees all bridge project development activities. Mike has 20 years experience in structural engineering, focusing on the design and project management of bridge structures utilizing reinforced concrete, precast/pretessed concrete, steel, and prefabricated treated timber. Mike also has considerable experience in bridge rehabilitation, including feasibiity studies and design for the repair and restoration of historic iron truss structures, timber covered bridges and historic arches. He has completed the design of several boardwalk structures for various greenway trail projects and has managed and designed numerous retaining wall projects of all types over his career.

Mike's responsibilities have also included managing numerous county bridge inspection and inventory programs for various counties throughout Indiana, having inspected over 4,000 bridges and small structures during his career. Mike also has managed culvert inventory programs for Kosciusko County from 1998-2001 and Cass County in 2004-2008. Mike also heads USI's underwater dive inspection team, which consists of two registered engineer divers and a safety team member. USI has completed underwater inspections for numerous counties and as a sub-consultant to several Indiana engineering firms. In addition, USI is prequalified to inspect complex bridges and perform fracture critical bridge inspections. USI's inspeciton team is also trained to perform confined space entry permit inspections on any type of structural system.

Mike is experienced in watershed hydrology and hydraulic analysis of bridge structures. His areas of expertise also include permitting activites with the Corps of Engineers, IDNR, and IDEM. Mike has assisted LPA's with the development of transportation improvement programs and federal aid funding, as well as trouble-shooting field construction problems on structural projects for contractors and developers.

In addition, Mike acts as American Timber Bridge & Culvert's technical representative, specializing in the design, fabrication and construction of modern pre-engineered, pre-fabricated, treated timber bridge structures for vehicular and pedestrian uses.
